Continuing education and development – from a manager’s perspective

Following the interview with Lene Kjærulff, we interviewed her manager, Tine Bryan Stensbøl, to get an insight into management’s motivation for employees’ further education and development.

Improvement of knowledge around drug development

Tine Bryan Stensbøl is the senior vice president of Project and Portfolio Management at Lundbeck where Lene Kjærulff originally was hired to work with operational support of projects. Tine Bryan Stensbøl quickly realized that Lene Kjærulff was invested in her job and had talent, and it would be beneficial for Lene Kjærulff’s professional development to enrol in continuing education:

“Lene Kjærulff had a background in biotechnology, and we chose the Master of Industrial Drug Development for Lene Kjærulff to improve her basic knowledge around drug development. If you do not have a pharmaceutical education, it can be difficult to relate to and understand the different stages of drug development. Moreover, Lene Kjærulff wanted to improve her skills and was willing to put in the hours needed.”

From research to the life science industry

Tine Bryan Stensbøl finds the master’s programme relevant, if you have worked for a longer period in research:

“Working with research, you tend to forget what it takes for a drug to gain market access. If you want to work with drug development and have a background in research, the Master of Industrial Drug Development is a great way to refresh your memory in regards to the different drug development phases.”

New career opportunities

Lene Kjærulff advanced to a position as project manager while she finalized her thesis in the master’s programme. As Tine Bryan Stensbøl puts it:

“I would not have had the courage to hire Lene Kjærulff as a project manager without her education from the master’s programme. It has certainly improved her profile and her competences in general. Especially in connection to what we do in the different phases of drug development, by example the regulatory phase. She needed this basic education within the pharmaceutical field if she was to advance and have a position as project manager. I could not have made it possible without the basic in place.”

A Platform for Networking

Tine Bryan Stensbøl highlights that continuing education is a great opportunity to engage further in networking and sparring with fellow master students, which she has seen as an important aspect of Lene Kjærulff’s enrollment in Master of Industrial Drug Development. She urges that both the participants and the programme management will continue to utilize and develop the programme as a platform for networking.
